Grew up in Buffalo with a neighborhood full of front porches. The old people would sit on them watching us kids running up and the street playing. Took a long time, but several years ago I finally added a front porch to my house. Coffee and the paper in the morning, a beer at the end of the - just chilling and watching the world go by. Wouldn't have it any other way.

One of the reasons I got the house I have is the big semi-wraparound porch. In the summer, we have a "living room" of furniture and plants set up out there, to eat out occasionally and encourage the neighbors to sit a spell.

People sitting on the front porch watching was the reason it was safe for the kids to run up and down the street. Unsupervised but never unguarded.
